Forecasting helps us with smart urban sustainability
Forecasting is a process of using historical data to make informed predictive estimates about the future. If used correctly, it can help us design more liveable sustainable, antifragile cities.
In this insightful, inspiring and thought-provoking podcast, we delve into the intriguing world of space travel and the human elements involved. Physicist, a former astronaut instructor, an entrepreneur and a commercial helicopter pilot Laura Winterling shares her experiences, perspectives, and valuable insights on the psychological and emotional aspects of astronauts, decision-making, and the essence of human connection

Laura Winterling’s journey to becoming an astronaut instructor is nothing short of extraordinary. Hailing from Germany, her passion for space and exploration was ignited during her early years, eventually leading her down a path of rigorous training and unparalleled dedication. But eventually, what made her to become an astronaut instructor was the leap of faith in herself:
“I became an astronaut instructor because I applied. That’s the easiest answer. I was not afraid to apply. And that’s already something that most people are scared of”, Laura says.
Laura is familiar with working with astronauts. But looking beyond the technical expertise, what makes a good astronaut? Curiosity, adaptability, and a profound sense of reliability form the backbone of success in the demanding field of space exploration.
“Astronauts need to be comfortable with the unknown, to be curious about the world around them, and to be reliable not just to the mission but to the entire team. It’s a combination of technical skills and personal attributes that make a successful astronaut”, Laura says in the podcast.
Her emphasis on the human aspect of the role sheds light on the significance of emotional intelligence and effective communication within the team.
“Astronauts spend extended periods in confined spaces, and the ability to understand and connect with fellow crew members becomes vital. It’s not just about the technical abilities; it’s about being able to support and rely on one another in the most challenging situations,” she adds.
Laura emphasizes the drawbacks of excessive perfectionism and the impact of hesitation on achieving significant milestones. Drawing parallels between space exploration and decision-making in various fields, she highlights the need to embrace imperfections and take timely actions for effective progress.
In the podcast, she sheds light on the impact of hesitation: “Perfection doesn’t get you to orbit. In fact, perfection can often be a hindrance, leading to hesitation and unnecessary delays. It’s essential to recognize when the pursuit of perfection becomes a roadblock to progress.”
With her extensive experience in high-stakes environments, Laura discusses the delicate balance between risk assessment and timely action, imperative in environments such as space travel and the real estate industry.
“Risk assessment is crucial, but if it takes too long, you’re going to crash. It’s about finding the balance between thorough evaluation and timely action, acknowledging that sometimes even imperfect decisions can yield significant progress”, she emphasizes.
Through her experiences, she highlights the importance of efficient decision-making, urging individuals to overcome the paralysis of overthinking and embrace a proactive approach. She encourages professionals to recognize the fine line between calculated risk-taking and stagnation and to foster an environment conducive to growth and innovation.

Laura Winterling’s insights underscore the critical role of empowerment, self-leadership, and a supportive team culture in driving efficient decision-making and creating a functional work environment.
“Effective teams are built on a foundation of trust and open communication,” she asserts. “Empowering team members to make their own decisions and fostering a culture of self-leadership is key to unlocking their full potential.”
Her profound understanding of the dynamics within teams shines a light on the transformative impact of a supportive work culture, where individuals feel valued and empowered. By encouraging self-leadership and establishing clear communication channels, professionals can pave the way for innovative thinking, impactful collaboration, and ultimately, a more successful and thriving team.
Despite the technological advancements and exploration, the importance of human connection remains fundamental, be it in space stations or within urban communities. Embracing empathy and effective communication can bridge the gap between isolation and camaraderie, even in the most remote and challenging environments.
“Whether it is a space station, a house or neighborhood, the same rule persists. Everything is about human connections; how well you can connect to the people that you need to succeed”, Laura says.
Laura’s emphasis on effective communication resonates as a powerful reminder of the enduring human need for meaningful interactions and social bonds. By nurturing these connections, whether in the vastness of space or the heart of a bustling city, individuals can cultivate thriving communities that foster a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

Cities contain a huge amount of information and data, which, however, is at times stored in a fragmented form or simply outdated. Meanwhile, the platforms that combine artificial intelligence and data can empower people and provide new information for real estate developers.
